Disclaimer

I’ll be experimenting with formatting and information. I’ve had success on PBE but ultimately this composition is experimental. Feel free to leave feedback and suggestions.

There’s a lot of information I intend to add, such as a variety of alternative mid/late game back-up compositions testing different class/origin synergies.

Overview

(3) Earn up to 4 additional gold after combat against another player.

Sorcerers gain double mana from attacking and allies have increased spell damage.

(3) +35% spell damage.

(6) +100% spell damage.

Exploration

In 9.14, Twisted Fate is scheduled for release. Note: 9.14 is not currently live.

Pick a Card: Twisted Fate throws a card that either stuns, deals damage around his target, or restores mana to himself and nearby allies.

Damage: 200 / 300 / 400
Stun Duration: 2 / 3 / 4
Mana Restore: 20 / 35 / 50

In light of this new addition, Pirates receive an indirect buff. A player can potentially obtain the Pirate’s synergy buff at Level 3 in the item shop. This is very meaningful since the Pirate’s buff gains value the longer it nets income.

Furthermore, Twisted Fate has access to the Sorcery synergy. At the present moment, Locket of the Iron Solari and Luden’s Echo scales with Sorcery’s +% spell damage (for whatever reason) and such compositions are unstoppable late game.

Twisted Fate has a very low mana pool meaning it requires less mana to use his ability. Similar to Akali, he is optimal with Seraph’s Embrace. His true potential lies within his blue card, which can spam team-wide ability casts.

Analysis

Strengths:

  • There are a lot of good inexpensive units that make great additions to your line-up while being synergy compatible: Kassadin, Lulu, and Pyke being the most notable.
  • If a Pirate synergy is obtained early, you’ll have a wealthy mid game especially combined with interest gold. You will likely have an advantage for levels and rerolls to powerup your team.
  • The Sorcerer buff has unique builds that have immense late game power. For example, Locket of the Iron Solari stacking and the Rabadon’s Deathcap & Luden’s Echo combination are great Sorcerer builds.
Weaknesses:

  • If Locket of the Iron Solari or Rabadon’s Deathcap is prioritized, in turn, other completed items are starved. For example, a Frozen Heart, Guinsoo’s Rageblade, and Phantom Dancer are trade-offs.
  • The Pirate synergy doesn’t provide any dueling synergies, thus enemy compositions completed in entirety may have fighting edges and overpower your units. A full replacement of Pirate units is costly as well.

Itemization

Guinsoo’s Rageblade, Rabadon’s Deathcap, and Spear of Shojin gives mages with high ability power scaling damage and short cast-times the most ideal resources to carry.
  •  Ahri
  •  Aurelion Sol
  •  Veigar
Frozen Heart, Zeke’s Herald, and Zephyr are stand-alone support items that can be equipped on peel orientated units. They will provide auras and utility for your team.
  •  Lulu
  •  Morgana
Spear of Shojin stacks the on-hit mana passive for high priority abilities. You want to identify high impact abilities that when used in succession carries fights.
  •  Lulu
  •  Pyke
  •  Veigar
Locket of the Iron Solari scales off Sorcerer’s +X% spell damage and shields stack on each other. Your Sorcerers will have mitigation damage guaranteeing ability casts.
  •  Lulu
  •  Morgana
Seraph’s Embrace stacking is for one-use finisher abilities. The starting mana Seraph’s Embrace provides makes devastating high cost abilities instant-cast at the start of fights.
  •  Karthus
  •  Miss Fortune
Dragon’s Claw and Phantom Dancer prevents most types of burst damage. It’s optimal on your de facto frontline as most of your units won’t have tank properties by themselves.
  •  Gangplank
  •  Graves
  •  Kassadin
Luden’s Echo splash damage will scale off Rabadon’s Deathcap and Sorcerer’s % damage. It is optimal on low mana pool units for a quick spell cast, but can be used by any burst mage.
  •  Ahri
  •  Miss Fortune
  •  Twisted Fate
Spear of Shojin is ideal for ability orientated auto-attack reliant units with large mana pools.
  •  Gangplank
  •  Twisted Fate
Guinsoo’s Rageblade helps on-hit and high base attack-speed carry units.
  •  Kassadin
  •  Pyke
  •  Twisted Fate
Seraph’s Embrace is good on spam units to get mana in between spells and lower downtime.
  •  Twisted Fate
  •  Veigar
Morellonomicon benefits area-of-affect damage dealing units to apply debuffs to multiple targets.
  •  Gangplank
  •  Karthus
  •  Miss Fortune
Red Buff is a Graves item for the mixture of burn damage with Gunslinger’s buff and durability.
  •  Graves

Early Game

Ideally, an early pick-up of a Pirate or a Needlessly Large Rod is a gateway to building your Pirate & Sorcerer composition. You can either obtain Pirate’s buff early or a component to many major items.

It is very inexpensive to equip the Pirate buff as both Pyke & Twisted Fate can be obtained in the first carousel round or during the first PvP rounds. Once in your line-up, while wins aren’t guaranteed, you’ll rack gold fast.

Alternatively, other damage-orientated filler compositions for temporary synergies are ideal to survive the early game. The first Sorcerer buff isn’t recommended since it is outclassed dueling wise at the early stages.

Graves, Pyke, & Twisted Fate: (3) Pirate

Kassadin + 2 of Ahri, Nidalee & Warwick: (2) Wild

Pyke + 2 of Graves, Lucian, & Tristana: (2) Gunslinger

Lulu + 2 of Garen, Darius, & Mordekaiser: (2) Knight

Mid Game

You will eventually incorporate Sorcerers into your team composition. The earliest both class and origin buffs can be obtained is at Level 5. You can sell filler units bought to survive in the early game in exchange for core 2★ units.

Twisted Fate is mandatory given his intersection to Pirate & Sorcerer. If both synergies can be hit, the remainder of units can be interchangeable according to the quantity of units and synergy of filler units.

You will likely be good on units if you’re properly playing for economy and hit your pirate synergy early. If these conditions are satisfied, pick for items during the carousel round as those will be more scarce.

However, don’t feel obligated to force your composition for synergy. For example, a 2★ Nidalee can stick around for a while and potentially be worth considering a hybrid Wild composition. It’s good to adapt to the situation.

Kassadin, Lulu & Twisted Fate (3) Sorcerer
+ Gangplank, Pyke, & Twisted Fate (3) Pirate

Exchangeable: Graves (Pirate) + Ahri, Morgana, & Veigar (Sorcerer)

Late Game

The end goal is obtaining (6) Sorcerer and (3) Pirate with 8 units in total. However, some deviation is acceptable, especially if you’re not stacking items interwoven with Sorcerer such as Locket of the Iron Solari and Rabadon’s Deathcap.

If an extra unit slot is desired, instead of Force of Nature, you can itemize Yuumi to complete the Sorcerer synergy. A lot of Pirate units such as Gangplank and Miss Fortune appreciate +100% spell damage.

A decent addition that can abuse Luden’s Echo is Akali, who is one of the fastest spell-casters in the game. However Twisted Fate could potentially substitute without breaking the synergy and requiring Yuumi.

If an optimal item is available (see: itemization), combining component items is ideal as opposed to specifically stacking one unit, especially if your team composition relative to others is falling behind.

Aurelion Sol, Karthus, Kassadin, Lulu, Morgana, & Twisted Fate (6) Sorcerer
+ Miss Fortune, Pyke, & Twisted Fate (3) Pirate

Exchangeable: Graves & Gangplank (Pirate) + Ahri & Veigar (Sorcerer)

Conclusion

I think while the current Sorcerers are an S Tier class, Pirates can be hit-or-miss especially if the synergy is acquired late. If Pirates are used to their maximum potential, you’ve got a lot of resources to invest in a Sorcerer damage-orientated composition. Pirates have innate links with Gunslingers, giving a mix of damage which is hard to counter properly.

Once Patch 9.14 is live, I predict this team composition could be around A or B Tier. Try it out!
