9.24 changes

Patch 9.24 brought us 3 new champions and a much needed Phantom Dancer nerf. While Amumu feels a little bit underwhelming (I’m expecting a buff in 9.25) the Soulbound duo Senna and Lucian are extremely powerful and found their way into a lot of S and A tier comps one of which I’m gonna cover closer in this article.

Phantom Dancer was nerfed in this patch to only negate the bonus damage from critical strikes, rather than dodging the entire attack. This opens up a lot more comps and itemisations compared to the previous patch. For example, Infinity Edge wasn’t being played at all because of PD being in every comp thus making IE being a bad choice. Now IE is one of the best items because PDs are gone. Unfortunately the PD changes also indirectly buff one of the strongest comps – Blender (Blademaster + Assassins) and making it even stronger.

Lucian and Senna are a great addition to Set 2. Senna being very powerful and currently played in 2 top tier comps – Shadow Rangers and Shadow Summoners.

Best Comps in 9.24

I will be covering 3 comps that in my opinion are the strongest in the meta right now. I evaluate comps mainly based on 2 factors: Overall strength and consistency.

Blender: S+ tier

9.24 1

4 Blademaster, 3 Assassin, 2 Steel, 2 Desert, 2 Mystic, 2 Cloud (3 on a cloud map)

Description

This team composition is the strongest on the current patch right now and I’m sure that every high elo player would agree with me here. The comp is named Blender after Nocturne (who is the main carry) cause he looks like a Blender when he spins with high attack speed, which he gains through Blademaster Spatula that you give him. It is an extremely offense-oriented team meant to burst your enemies carries through Nocturne and front line through Sivir.

When to play

Whenever you have Spatula so you can make Nocturne a Blademaster. You achieve that through combining Spatula and Recurve Bow.

Early game

Just play whatever upgraded units you can while building economy. Assassins like Diana and LeBlanc are great item holders for Nocturne later and you’ll need to use one of them until you find Kha’Zix.

Mid Game

Now once you get to the mid game (Stage 3 – after golems) this is where your comp starts to shine.

On level 6 you wanna play: Nocturne, Sivir, Aatrox, Yasuo, Qiyana, Kha’Zix which gives you 4 Blademaster + 3 Assassin

The hardest unit to find out of these 6 is definitely Kha’Zix and you will very rarely have him this early so in the meantime play a replacement Assassin – Diana / LeBlanc.

Late Game

On level 7 you wanna add Rek’Sai which gives you a solid front liner and survivability for Nocturne because of Steel trait.

On level 8 you usually add Janna or Steel Lux if you’re lucky enough to find her for extra survivability. Also whenever you pick up Master Yi put him in instead of Aatrox.

Itemization

So the itemization for this comp is following (priority from top to bottom):

BM Spat – Nocturne Infinity Edge (can be replaced with Deathblade) – Nocturne Hush – Sivir Red Buff – Sivir 2nd Infinity Edge / Deathblade / Guinsoo’s Rageblade – Nocturne Hurricane – Sivir

Positioning

Ideal positioning shown on the picture above.

Predator Hyperroll: S tier

9.24 2

3 Predator + 3 Poison + 2 Steel + 2 Ranger + 2 Crystal

Description

Team composition built around Predators, while having Kog’Maw as our main carry and Poison to slow down enemies to buy more time for Kog’Maw to kill everyone.

When to play

When you get a lot of predators offered in the early game and you have good items for Kog (Bow, Belt, Vest, Sword and Cloak)

Early Game

Play your predators and other upgraded units while building up economy to hyperroll. It’s very important not to level up at all in stage 2! The reason is you want to be level 4 after golems while hyperrolling, because you have 15% extra chance for 1 cost units. And you want that because you are trying to 3* Kog’Maw

Mid Game

After Golems on 3-1 you want to roll most if not all your gold looking for these 7 units only: Kog’Maw, Rek’Sai, Skarner, Ornn, Volibear, Dr. Mundo, Nocturne

You are trying to 3* your predators – Kog’Maw, Rek’Sai, Skarner. On Level 5 you want to play this comp:Kog’Maw, Rek’Sai, Skarner, Ornn, Volibear

Once you hit 3* Kog’Maw you can build economy again to go to level 6 where you add Nocturne for Steel and when you find Twitch you wanna put him with Dr. Mundo for Poison instead of Ornn and Volibear.

Late Game

At this stage of the game at least 2 of your predators should be 3*. On level 7 you wanna add Ashe for Crystal and put in Singed instead of Dr. Mundo if you happen to find him.

On Level 8 you want to add Crystal / Steel Lux if you are lucky enough to find them and if not play Taric for an extra crystal unit and a front liner.

Itemization

So the itemization for this comp is following (priority from top to bottom): Hurricane – Kog’Maw Red Buff – Kog’Maw Giant Slayer (can be replaced with Statikk Shiv / Guinsoo’s Rageblade) – Kog’Maw Morellonomicon – Singed Thieve’s Gloves – Rek’Sai Tank items – Skarner

Positioning

Ideal positioning shown on the picture above.

Shadow Rangers: S tier

9.24 3

4 Ranger, 3 Shadow, 3 Inferno, 2 Crystal, 2 Warden

Description

Auto attack based comp with Senna buffing your units with on-hit damage. Your main carries are Ashe, Senna and Kindred.

When to play

When you are offered rangers in the early game and have a lot of auto-attack based items – Recurve Bows and B.F. Swords

Early Game

In the early game you generally want to play 2 Rangers and 2 Wardens as your front liners. You can use Vayne as an item-holder until you find Ashe.

Mid Game

On levels 5 and 6 you wanna transition into 4 rangers and 1-2 Wardens. Your main goal in the mid game is to find your final 4 Rangers the hardest being Ashe because she’s a 4 cost and Kindred because she is highly contested. You can run Braum or other Wardens while you’re looking for Taric and Amumu.

Late Game

On Level 7 you wanna add Sion for Shadow buff, which is a huge powerspike for Kindred and Senna.

On Level 8 you wanna roll for our legendary wardens – Taric and Amumu. Your final comp consists of 4 rangers, 3 shadows and 2 wardens.

Itemization

So the itemization for this comp is following (priority top to bottom): Ashe items – any combination of Statikk Shiv / Hurricane / Giant Slayer / Guinsoo’s Rageblade Any tear item – Senna Morellonomicon – Senna Kindred items

Positioning

Ideal positioning shown on the picture above.

That’s it for now! I’ll be going more in depth on Blender comp next week and will revisit meta snapshot in 2 weeks once the meta settles a bit more. Good luck in your TFT matches!
